Weekly Update: December 17, 2018

It has been a busy few weeks. Find time to enjoy each other and your students this week. They will miss you when we are away on vacation.

Staff Professional Development:

We DO NOT meet as a staff this week. You may wish to plan for the new R/W units you will begin when we return from vacation, get organized for Fountas and Pinnell or any other work which benefits your team.

Fountas and Pinnell-deadline updated-February 19:

Thank you to those of you have already submitted P-30’s for the F & P release, Eunice learned that they will not be accepting any release days for Friday (it’s a High Impact Day). The deadline to have the data entered was moved to February 19th.

The assessments are available now. Remember to clear your filters, search for “Fountas” or “DRA” and look for the 2018-19 3rd administration. Here’s the GIANT assessment document to answer your additional questions about other assessment dates, A/B book clarification, and other exciting information.

Handouts from Teachers College Visit- grades TK-2:

Elma has compiled most, if not all of the handouts from Beth Hickey’s visit and placed them here–resources and materials.  The focus of Beth’s visit was small groups.  Would you like to plan small groups with Elma?  Please email Elma or complete the TOSA request.

Support for English Learner Materials:

This Tuesday, the Learning and Innovation team hosted a professional learning session for teachers of students in grades 3-6.

Holiday Party Details:

We will be celebrating on Friday, December 21 at 6:30 PM at the Perkins place (1150 Anchorage Lane #404, San Diego, 92106).  To get into the building, press 404 on the keypad.

If you’re joining us (and we hope you are!), please RSVP by sending $7 (per person; significant others are warmly welcomed) to Holli in room 26 before Wednesday, 12/19.  She’ll buy and prepare a lovely ham and her specialty martinis (otherwise BYOB).  Please bring either a side dish or dessert to share.

There will be an optional gift exchange (under $20, NO “white elephant” please).

January ILT Dates:

Earlier this year, your team identified representatives for each of the ILT meetings. The dates should be on your outlook calendar. Just a heads up as the meetings are in January, shortly after we return from vacation.
Even more Fountas and Pinnell Information:

  Here a few of the reminders when assessing students in Fountas & Pinnell:

  • Kinder teachers do not give the Wordlist because it might not allow you to start assessing students in A books
  • A and B are for meant for Concepts of Print
  • When asking the comprehension questions for levels A and B start with “What is the story about?” or “What did you learn?”
  • In A and B, students only need to score a 2 or 3 for the literal question to move on to the next level
  • Beyond the Text questions will not be used when determining placement in A and B levels
  • Test in both Fiction and Non-fiction books during the assessment window (Ex: if you test A fiction, then test B non-fiction, etc.)

Entering F and P data in Illuminate in February:

  • 2018-2019 Fountas and Pinnell 2nd administration
  • Enter students’ both INDEPENDENT and INSTRUCTIONAL levels in Illuminate
  • For levels C and above enter all scores: instructional level, instructional accuracy, instructional fluency and instructional comprehension scores, instructional genre, and independent level
