Weekly Update: November 26, 2018

I hope that you enjoyed time off with your friends and family.

Staff PD:

We DO NOT meet as a staff this week. Plan to meet with your grade level team and/or your vertical partners. You may wish to co-plan for upcoming units, review ELD placements/supports for English Learners or anything else which feels important to your team.

Hour of Code Dec 3-9:

Please plan for your class to participate in the Hour of Code. During the week of Dec 3-9, identify an hour period for your students to try out coding. If you have already incorporated this into your regular schedule, please use the resources currently in place. If you are not currently teaching your students to code, you may wish to check out this website.

Furniture Samples in Room 23:

There is a new set of furniture on display in room 23. Please check it out when you have time.

LanSchool Issues:

Big picture-if you are having issues with LanSchool-enter a work order with very specific details.

Troubleshooting

**If the Chromebooks show in the class list but do not display their screens (in the thumbnail view) this is because kids are choosing the option to “deny access” and should be told to restart their Chromebooks and choose correctly (this is a classroom management issue for the teacher to handle).

**If the Chromebooks do not show up in the class list teachers may need help with finding/adding students to their class list. Or perhaps the Chromebooks need to be reset and re-enrolled to fix issues with their student client (techs can help with either of these issues).

**If the complaint has to do with the “All Your Brand” messages appearing where the student name should be, we know about this and there’s nothing we can do at the moment. This is an issue between Stoneware (makers of LanSchool) and Google.

Grant Writer:

The District is working with a grant writer. They are focused on applying for funding to supplement instruction, not for things that are considered basic services. Let me know if you have any questions. If you are considering applying for a grant, let me know and I will reach out to the District on your behalf.

Thank you for your hard work completing your report cards. Please remember to file a copy in each child’s cum folder. Thank you to those of you who have already completed this.

Number Talks Resources:

The Math TOSAs created a website with resources for Number Talks. It has power point slides created for the various number talks for each grade level span and includes the title of the strategies for each of the mathematical topics that are in the actual book.
Make sure you click on your grade level, which is found at the top of the page in a light gray color.

District Champions:

There are many amazing students, families and staff who support us each and every day. Use this link to submit nominations for your colleagues, staff, students, parents, volunteers, and community partners.

Teachers College Wisdom:

Cindy Wagner attended the Teachers College Leadership Conference. She shared a few notes from Lucy Caulkins which I have listed below.

Test Prep Findings From TCRWP
·        SBAC to Reading Level Correlation is 85%
·        Number one way to increase test scores is to have students reading at grade level!
·        Test PREP is very different that test PRACTICE
·        Focus on maximizing the volume of reading and writing for students all year long
·        The curriculum and having kids spend lots of time reading and writing and getting to grade level.
·        Find ways to make test prep fun and joyful.  This will add confidence on the day of the test. When we think about test prep from a stressful vantage point, we pass that along on testing day.
·        Test prep unit starts four to five weeks before test.  No sooner!
·        The skills and strategies needed on the test ARE taught in the UOS.
