Weekly Update: April 2, 2018

Welcome back! I hope that you enjoyed your spring vacation!

Staff Meeting:

We DO meet as a staff this Wednesday at 1:45 in room 23.

Health and Safety Fair:

Thanks to Ms. Cindy, our Health and Safety Fair is scheduled for this Friday, April 6th from 8:15 to 11:15 on the blacktop and dirt field. Thanks to Erika and Holli for, again, coordinating ur flashmob and to all of you for practicing the dance moves during p.e. time with our students. Additional details will be shared at our staff meeting on Wednesday.

Dr. McNamara Visit:

Dr. McNamara will visit Emory on Thursday, April 5th from 9:00-11:00.

Jump Rope For Heart:

Thanks to Karina for coordinating our Jump Rope for Heart campaign! On Tuesday, April 3 we will jump. Please have your students bring their chairs to the blacktop for the event. In advance of the event, you will need to number your students from 1-5. Remind your students to wear sunblock and comfortable shoes and to bring the envelopes with donation $ by Monday, April 2 or 3rd. Teachers please send the envelope to K-1 or place in Karina’s mailbox. Tell your students they will get Jax/ clasp if they donate $5.

 

PLNU:

Thanks to K.C., Erika Pehrson, Angelica Goulding, Melinda Seubert, Shelly Molina, Erin Major, Dave Benson, Patty Valdivia, and Don Brizendine. As a reminder, these students are enrolled in an art class and this will be their first time teaching students. We are excited to for these students to provide two lessons about a famous artist to our students.

Budget Update:

We will receive an additional $23,240 into our school Title I budget for the 2017-18 school year (our current year). We will be allowed to carryover 15% of our full allocation which is $11,050. This leaves $12,190 to spend by April 14th, 2018. This money is allocated for services and materials above and beyond the regular school program. I invite you to attend our next Site Shared Decision Making meeting or speak to a School Site Council Representative about things to purchase with the additional funds

ELPAC Testing:

 

The ELPAC testers will return April 2-4 to continue administering the 1:1 assessments to students in grades 3-6. They return in May to administer the ELPAC to students in grades TK-2.

Teachers College Visit:

As a reminder Christine Ikin returns to Emory to support the teachers of grades 3-6 on Thursday/Friday April 12th and 13th. See the schedule below.

Innovation Expo- April 25:

The District Innovation Expo is April 25th from 4:30 – 7:00.

Student Speaker application process.  If you have anyone interested in applying, they will need to submit an application which includes a one-minute video.  Student speaker video submissions are due April 6th  The topic is:

         Tell the story of a moment when you realized: *

         You inspired yourself; OR

         You inspired someone else

Education Foundation Grants:

Need $MONEY$ for a special project? The SBUSD Education Foundation has grant  money available for the 2018-2019 school year.  Applications are available at sbusdef.org beginning April 2, 2018, with submissions due on or before April 27, 2018.   These grants are for up to $500.00 for each person listed on the application. Certificated and classified employees of SBUSD are encouraged to apply.  Grant applications will receive a blind read by a committee of community members, and an announcement of recipients will be made on May 15, 2018. Sock Drive:

Thanks to Holli and Dave for coordinating our Sock Drive!! Please encourage your students to donate to Emory’s first Sock Drive. 

Sock spirit days all week:

Thursday- mix and match

Friday- the crazier the better

Each day, please email Holli the number of people participating in sock spirit day out of the total number in the class  (22/30) or the %. Classes with the highest totals win a Rock ‘N Roll recess Friday hosted by Holli and Dave.

Recommended Resource:

From Angelica-

Some of you are probably already using Newsela and TweenTribune for non-fiction reading with your students. I want to highly recommend ReadWorks https://www.readworks.org You can create an account and have students sign up to your class with a code via Google. You can assign articles and view their results while also monitoring their annotations and highlights all for FREE.

I have found ReadWorks (lots of great features available) and TweenTribune (no annotating available) to be the best for their price- free. Newsela is a great too, but teachers don’t have access to each students results, unless you pay the premium account. Teachers can monitor students, but they literally have to walk around to each students dashboard to document each article’s quiz result and student average. Sorry, but I just don’t have time. Something to consider for next year. 

Overall, my students’ opinion is that they love the choices on Newsela (highlight, annotating, quiz) and like ReadWorks (annotation, masking, highlighting, teacher can monitor each student, testing results).

I hope this helps those that are undecided on which one to use.

We do not meet as a staff this week it is a PLC Wednesday. You might meet with your grade level team to prepare for the benchmark/interim assessments or maybe review the writing assessments from District Writing Day. Perhaps you want to review the test prep units. Use the time in the best way to meet your team’s needs.

ELPAC:

Bertha Lopez, Estela Mora and Ruben ? will be at Emory all week to support the administration of the ELPAC assessment.

District Writing Day:

Tuesday, March 6th is District Writing Day. During a 45 minute period students should respond to the narrative prompt. Print the prompt for yourself, then consider the paper you’ll need. Please have students write this by hand, rather than type. Students can have access to the prompt either via projector, computer, or paper copy. If you’ve done a very recent on-demand for your narrative writing unit of study, that will suffice. Scores will not be recorded in Illuminate. With all that we have going on this week, you may postpone to the best date for your students. If you plan to change the date, please let me know- if you have not already done so.

Resource for grades 3-6

During PLC this week, we discussed providing opportunities for students to marathon read on their chromebooks. Many of you already use Newsela. You may be aware of this, but the free version of Newsela allows students to annotate text (non-fiction only). I WOULD NOT use this solely for marathon reading, however, if you are already signed up, this is a good resource to use.
