Weekly Update: October 30, 2017

Thank you for your hard work communicating student progress to families (report cards) and helping our school community come together and each other’s company (Fall Carnival).

Google Expeditions Augmented Reality:

Google will be at Emory on Monday, October 30th. Click here to see the schedule. Teachers in the left column meet in 23 and right column meets in 24. Thank you for your willingness to adjust your daily schedules to make this happen for our students.

To prepare:

  1. Mark your calendar we will meet from 7:30-7:55 on Monday October 30th in room 23
  2. Group students into groups of 3-4

Staff Professional Development:

This week we DO meet as a staff at 1:45 in room 23. Please bring your laptop. The Learning and Innovation Team TOSA’s will be here to help further our knowledge and understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards.

Report Cards in Cum Folder:

Reminder– please place a copy of each trimester one report card into your students’ cum folders.

School Safety Plan Update:
We have updated Safe School Plan and Material Safety Data Binders. If you are interested or have the need, you may review the binders located next to the office copier/printer near Ms. Dani’s desk.

Report Card Committee Feedback:

Congratulations on making it through Trimester 1 report cards! Jen Oliveira was hoping you might take one minute to give the Report Card Committee some feedback about the new report card (5 questions, and one of those is your grade level).

A few words about supervision duty:

There is nothing more important to me than the safety of you, our students and families. Therefore, I’d like to remind us all that it is critical that we are on time to our supervision duties and present- not chatting with colleagues, but scanning and moving through the area we are supervising. Thank you for supporting guest teachers and trading duties as needed.

Eagle Pride Reward Tshirt:
Thank you for your hard work developing criteria for your team’s reward t-shirt. . Please be sure you have shared with me your final draft (in paper or via google docs. No later than Nov 3rd, please share this information with your students and families. Cindy Pillado has the t-shirts and will be your point of contact to obtain them for your students.

Imagine Learning:

Thanks to Laura, Connie, Heather, Sharon and Monica for supporting Imagine Learning this year! Licenses may be used during the school day and/or in our before or after school sessions. Thank you for returning permission slips. Last year we purchased 100 licenses, this year, we have only purchased 70. Before and after school sessions began the week of Oct 23.

ST Math:
As a reminder it is recommended that students in grades K-2 use ST Math for 60 minutes per week and grades 3-6 use it for 90 minutes. It is recommended that students use it for no fewer than 20 minutes per session.

Our Labsite week with Learning and Innovation schedule for Nov 6-10 has been cancelled and a 1 day Writing Workshop Labsite has been scheduled for 11/29.

Point Loma Upcoming Visits:

We are excited to continue to host students from Point Loma Nazarene. As a reminder, these students are enrolled in an art class and this will be their first time teaching students. We are excited to for these students to provide two lessons about a famous artist to our students.  Thank you Dene, Sharon, Georgina, Maria, Rebecca, Jeanne, RoseAnn, Leslie, Aranzazu, Monica and Erika!

Thank you for a fantastic bosses’ day! You are an amazing team to lead!

Staff PD:

We DO NOT meet as a staff this week. You might join us at Book Club at 1:45 in room 23. We are reading Guide to the Writing Workshop Ch 1-4. You might finalize your report cards or you might help Erin and Shelly get set up for the Haunted Hallway (1:30-5:30) in the cafeteria.

Report Cards and IEP Goal Progress:

As a reminder, you will send report cards home on October 27.

IEP Goal Progress reporting:
Any student receiving Special Education services must have their progress on IEP goals updated and sent home along with the report card.

I sent an email letting you know that you may select “na” using the drop down menu for students who are fluent in English.

 “please remind students of the theme for each day, or send in class dojo.  Some students might not realize until they see everyone that day.  I will put posters around, but if you can put reminders in your class it would be great.
Here are the themes for each day:
Monday: Kick off day-  “Red Day”- wear red (you can even let students write in red that day, up to you 😉
Tuesday: “Turn your back on drugs”- wear clothes backwards day
Wednesday: “Team up against drugs”- wear jersey or team shirt
Thursday: “Follow your dreams, don’t do drugs” – wear pajamas
Friday: “Superheroes have the power to say NO”- wear your favorite superhero shirt

Restraining Orders Update Office:
This week I attended a meeting about revising our site safety plan. We were advised by the Sheriff’s Department to let staff know that if you have a restraining order against any person, to please provide that information to me so that we may support your and our safety.
Steam Maker Fest:

Computer Lab:
It is recommended do not hang headphones on the tower.  Either lay them down on the keyboard or hang them on the side of the table. Connie has taken time to put zip tags on each headphone to organize the long cord.  Please do not let students remove the zip tags. Please do not let student take off the soft headphone cushions. Please email Teresa with any problems with a computer that needs a work order.

I hope that you enjoyed this beautiful San Diego Weekend!

Flag Salute:

Our outdoor sound system is on its last legs. Therefore, we will be doing flag salute old school style. We will meet on the playground, but lead the flag salute from the office. A new system has been ordered. Fingers crossed that it will meet our needs.

Staff Pd:

We meet this Wednesday as a full staff at 1:45 in room 23. Please bring your computers. Agenda includes CAASPP results, reward t-shirt criteria, primary intervention group placement.

Workshop–personal reflection:

As we get better and better at using the TC Units of Study and the workshop method to help our students learn and grow, I challenge you to ask yourself these questions:

How mini are my mini lesson? (8-10 minutes is recommended)

Am I seeing all of my students each week during Reading and Writing in a conference?

Am I fitting in Reading and Writing Workshop (45-60 minutes each) each day?

Have I done any running records with my students since we administered the Fountas and Pinnell R/A to help me know which books to give them or how to place them in small group?

Teaching is hard work. Continue to challenge yourself and reflect on your practice every day, If you need support in any of these areas, please let me know can spend time with you or schedule time for you to meet with our ELA TOSA ELMA.

You may be thinking, what does this mean? A staff developer from Teacher’s College at Columbia University in New York will visit our school meet with us, demonstrate for us and answer our questions. The model will be similar to the Learning and Innovation Labsite from last year.

Federal Survey Cards:
This Wednesday (Oct 18) every teacher in the South Bay district will receive a class roster (STU409) and Teacher Verification Form along with Federal Impact forms for each student. As the students return their cards to school, teachers should check off the student’s name on the roster. When all cards are received, teachers will return the cards, class roster, and signed verification form to the school Attendance Secretary. Currently the district receives funds for children whose parents are active military, live in federal housing, or work on federal property. Thank you for your efforts to get the forms completed.
DISTRICT CHAMPIONS PROGRAM:
Nominate Someone Today!

Superintendent Katie McNamara is excited to honor District Champions. These quarterly awards recognize students, parents/guardians, staff, teams, organizations, and community members that demonstrate outstanding work, dedication to the District’s mission and goals, commitment to our community, and strong support for the South Bay Union School District. The 2017-2018 District Champions will be honored at evening events on October 13, December 8, March 9, and June 1.  Please use the Nomination Form and help us honor and recognize team members and partners that champion our work, our community, and our District.
Shadow A Student Challenge:
South Bay is launching the Shadow a Student Challenge, which is a fun and interesting way for leaders to experience an entire school day through the eyes of a student.  The purpose is not to observe classes, but to be immersed in a student’s experience including bus stops, campus arrival, recess, lunch,trips to the library, Impact rotations, and more. Educators and researchers have long known that shadowing can lead to powerful observations and insights. The Shadow a Student Challenge provides methods and a network to help school leaders achieve Deeper Learning for all students. Let me know if you have a suggestion for who I might want to shadow.

North Island Credit Union has a Teacher Grant Program, which provides $500 to educators for special classroom projects and innovative learning opportunities.  Applications must be submitted online by October 20, 2017.

I hope that you are enjoying a fantastic weekend. For those of you who were wondering…… the sprinklers DID NOT turn on during the campout! Success!

TOSA ELMA:

We are excited to have our ELA Teacher On Special Assignment, Elma, in PLC this week Oct 9th-13th.

Arts Assembly Friday, Oct 13: 

We are so excited to have Matthew Schwartz of Cold War Kids (and Karen Tomlinson’s son) perform for us Friday afternoon (10/13).
 
Matthew will share a bit about his love of reading and writing while a student and perform for the students. He has another engagement shortly after our assemblies. Following the show, please return to your classrooms with your students so that we can allow Matthew to leave immediately after he finishes with our kids.
 
When: Friday October 13th
Where: Cafeteria
Why: To help our students make the connection that reading and writing helps rock starts be successful. To enjoy beautiful music and lyrics.

Welcome back!! I hope that you enjoyed relaxing and refreshing fall breaks. I am excited to be back and look forward to seeing all of you.

Staff Professional Learning Network:

This Wednesday, October 4th, we have our first Professional Learning Network meeting from 2:00-3:10 at BAYSIDE  Elem 490 Emory St. IB. As a reminder, we were assigned to a PLN this year to provide an opportunity for cross school collaboration. We will discuss utilizing the PLC structure to assist in planning for reading and writing workshop.

Impact Teacher Rotation:

Our impact teachers rotate to new classrooms this Tuesday, Oct 3rd. Please prepare your students and help your new impact teacher be successful. As a reminder, Bradley Allen is teaching Art, Mayra Gomez is teaching STEM and Karen Tomlinson is teaching Music. Click here to view the schedule.

Advice from the Behavior Support Team about the transition back from Fall Break: 

With the two week break from the school routine, it is critical that our students are provided with supports so as they may be able to settle back into their school and classroom environment. The Behavior Support Team (BST) believes that during this time it is imperative to provide positive reinforcement for our students, especially our students with behavioral concerns.

Here are some ways to get all students, especially those with challenging behaviors, back on track after a long break:

1 – Review whole class expectations

2 – Review classroom behavior management system

3 – Review class classroom incentives and consequences

4 -Provide positive reinforcement multiple times during the student’s day (whole class acknowledgement as well as individual recognition)

Assessment Document- Revisions:

The Learning and Innovations team have been revising this document to include information about grading ELD (pages 7-8). This will be followed up with more information from L & I and a site discussion. Additional updates include:

  • Changes to the report cards (pages 3-4)
  • When is it appropriate to give a 4 (bottom of page 5)
  • A word about homework (top of page 9)
  • Testing to Hard (middle of page 11)
