Weekly Update: March 6, 2017

It was so great to be in so many of your classrooms this week. It has been busy and I have not gotten to be in your rooms to see what our students are doing.  I really enjoyed my time-our students were having fun while being highly engaged in well planned activities. Thank you!

District Writing Day:

Tuesday March 7th is the next District Writing Day. Here are a few reminders:

District Writing Day- Assessment Specifics and Updat

  • All students will respond to a Narrative prompt.  Prompts were placed in your boxes Thursday.
  • Students will be given (no more than) 45 minutes to respond.
  • Writing response must be done with paper and pencil
  • Students will need to have access to as many sheets of paper as they would like.
    • They can start with one sheet, and if they need additional, they may take from a pile.
    • Please do not give them a predetermined amount (ex. 5 pages stapled together) as this may overwhelm some students.


  • Students will use provided paper with lines and a space for drawing.

3rd -6th

  • Students will use regular lined paper.

Independent Reading Club Recommendations:

Emory’s Independent School Reading Club will meet Monday-Friday (not on minimum days) 2:35-3:00 in room 6. The criteria for students is as follows:

  • Low reading engagement at home
  • Students reading below grade level
  • Fountas and Pinnell reading levels E and above
  • Only by teacher recommendation

Placement Cards:

Placement cards will be distributed on Monday, March 6th and due back on Friday, March 10th. *Teacher are to complete Sections C, H, I, J and K         

SBUSD – Grade Placement Card—Teacher Information- March 2017
The Grade Placement Card information is all on one card:
1.       Top half – Demographic/Attendance Information—The Demographic/Attendance Information card is pre-populated, sent home for parent signature,  and returned to the office with any changes.
2.       Bottom half – Teacher Information—All student information that we were able to populate from Illuminate will already appear on the card. This information is not new to parents because it was pulled from the February 24th report card. Once the signed card returned from parents, teachers will complete the sections indicated with * below

Teacher’s College comes to South Bay:
Last year Teacher’s College came to South Bay and lead a five day Reading Institute. They are scheduled to return this summer June 12-16th to host a Writing Institute. Spots will be very limited. Please mark your calendars. I will share details as I receive them.
Projector Refresh:
Emory is scheduled for a Projector Refresh. 19 classrooms with PRM25 & PRM35 classrooms projectors to get new Epson 530’s. Starting Spring Break and done by 2nd week of April, 2017
Emory’s Innovation Fair:
Emory will be having its first Innovation Fair on Wednesday, April 12th from 5:30-7:00 p.m. The idea of the Innovation Fair is to involve students and their families in creativity, innovation, and inspiration. All students in grades TK-6th are invited to participate. Students will work in a team with one or more family member(s) to think of something creative, innovative, or inspiring to present at our Innovation Fair. A flyer and application went out to students and is posted on the Emory webpage. Students and families that are interested in participating will fill out an application and turn it in to their teacher by Monday, March 13th.  Please place all applications that you receive in Araceli’s box. There will be an informational meeting on Wednesday, March 8th for families that are interested in participating and have additional questions or need clarification; however, the informational meeting is NOT mandatory for families to participate. We know our students and parents have great ideas to share so please encourage families to participate.



We start our new character trait this week which is Patience and the award assembly will be on April 20th. The video is available on the connect with kids website (http://sbusd.connectwithkids.com/). The video can be reached by going to Student Resources-> Elementary->Character/Life Skills. Lesson plans to use/modify are right below the video and the K-2 lesson plans are available on the previous page. We will stay on the same character trait for March and April because of Spring Break.

Upcoming Events:

New and Prospective Student Open House April 4th 9:00 a.m.

Health and Safety Week– April 3-7- culminates in event morning Friday, April 7

Our next PTA General Assembly meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 7th at 2:30 in the Volunteer Center.

The District ELAC will meet at Emory on Tuesday, March 7th from 9:00-11:00 in room 6.

Innovation Fair Wednesday, April 12th will be Emory’s first ever Family Innovation Fair. Details coming soon.

CAASPP/State Testing.Students in grades 3-6 will participate in state testing April 24th through May 5th.
