November 28, 2016

Welcome back. I hope you enjoyed a restful and relaxing vacation with your friends and family.

Staff Meeting:

We will meet this Wednesday, Nov 30th at 1:45 in room 23.

PBS/Character Trait:

We continue to focus on Self Control and will do so through our Soaring to Success Awards Ceremonies on December 16th. Please see the information below and teach or revisit the Self Control unit this week. The video is available on the Connect With Kids Website . (http://sbusd.connectwithkids.com/). The video can be reached by going to Student Resources-> Elementary->Character/Life Skills. Lesson plans to use/modify are right below the video and the K-2 lesson plans are available on the previous page.

Reading Pathways Book Club:

We will begin a Book Club with our focus book being Reading Pathways from the Units of Study Kit. Book Club Members, who attend all sessions, will receive an Emory staff bookclub t-shirt and the opportunity to purchase a book for their classroom library or a professional text. Our first meeting date is Wednesday December 14th.

Brain Pop Survey:

Please email me by the end of the day Friday, December 2nd if you are interested in maintaining our Brain Pop subscription. The cost to maintain this subscription is $2300. To give you some perspective, we could send a couple of people to high level professional development, purchase loads of classroom library books, or supply our school with three months paper with a similar amount of money. If this is a resource which most of you use regularly (at least once per week) we should maintain it, but I’d hate to renew it if we’re not using it.

Restorative Practice Training SDCOE:

Please let me know if you are interested in attending a two day training at SDCOE on Restorative Practice/Circles in your classroom. This training will teach you a set of tools which you might use to foster a sense of community within your classroom.

You must attend both days which are Feb 13th and Feb 24th. See the link for the flyer below for additional details. Let me know by Friday Dec 2nd if you would like to be considered to attend this two day training.

NEW THRIVELY accounts created (www.thrively.com/sbusd )
One way to see the strengths and interests of your students is to use a tool like Thrively. You will be receiving an email shortly about your optional Thrively account which will give you information about how to get your 5th– 8thgrade students logged in. Students take an interest and strengths inventory, and it will connect them with projects in our area along with activities. You’ll see a dashboard of all of your students and ways to support their strengths and interests in your classroom. Just a tool to spark some ideas…

Coach’s Corner:

The second round of Fountas and Pinnell reading assessments are to be completed by February 2, 2017. If you are planning on getting a head start, and testing some students before winter break, my suggestion would be to assess your most struggling readers first. These students tend to have low reading engagement at home and the long break might disrupt their reading progress. If you plan to assess all of your students after winter break, assess your most struggling readers last. They will benefit from additional reading instruction after the long break.

November 7, 2016

Whew, what a week. I learned so much! I am tremendously grateful to Angela, Christy and Holli for opening their classrooms for all of us to visit. Thanks to all of you for opening yourselves up to this style of professional development. You reflected on your practice and asked great questions. I hope you found some of your practices reinforced by what you saw and were able to identify next steps for you. Thank you for being fully present. I always feel lucky to be the principal at Emory, but am especially proud this week.

Staff PD:

This is a personal planning week.

Flag Salute Canceled:

As many of us will be pre-meeting for labsite. We will  NOT have flag salute this week.

November Board Highlight and Visit:

I hope that you will be able to join me there (6:00p.m.- 6:30). Our Board members will visit Emory on November 17th to view the Global Cardboard Challenge and some of your classrooms.

Coach’s Corner:

It has been a wonderful week full of learning in the Workshop Lab Site sessions. Many of us were interested in the “Readers and Writers Workshop Conferring Notebook” that Jennifer Oliveira has used as a tool for conferring and small groups. If you are interested in putting your own Conferring Notebook/tool together, all of the resources and HERE.

Innovation Caravan:

5th and 6th grade teachers, Innovation Caravan is an opportunity for our students to highlight their thinking about big ideas, a special project they have been working on or anything that they find interesting. Please be sure to share the innovation caravan applications with your students and encourage students to apply.

Here is the application for the South Bay Innovation Caravan. (due Nov 18th)
