Weekly Update: October 3, 2016

Welcome back. I hope that your fall break was relaxing and refreshing.

Coach’s Corner:

At our last professional development meeting we became familiar with conferring and different types of small group instruction in literacy. Please consider which of these you would like to learn about more in depth. I would like to hear your responses during PLC meetings.

Conferring:

  • Students independently read a variety of texts.
  • The teacher confers with individual students to support and assess reading as well as to teach to individual needs.

Strategy Lessons:

  • Teacher pulls small, temporary groups to explicitly teach reading strategies and skills.
  • Students read different self-selected texts.
  • Student practice in text at their independent level.

Guided Reading:

  • Teacher pulls small, temporary groups to explicitly teach reading strategies for processing a variety of texts.
  • Students read same book chosen by the teacher.
  • Students practice in text at their instructional level.

Literature Circles:

  • Teacher and students set up assigned reading tasks and agree on meeting times.
  • Students engage in in-depth discussion about a common text they have read.

PLC Wednesday Oct 5th:

After school, Wednesday, Oct 5th is a PLC day. Please meet with your grade level teams. Possible activities, plan collaboratively, review ELD groups (need to make any changes, continue to look at data (CAASPP, Fountas and Pinnell etc),  etc.

Email and Calendar Invites:

Please be sure to check your email twice a day. I suggest before school and after school. To improve our efficiency, we will use outlook to invite you to meetings. If you need help learning about the calendar feature in outlook let Araceli or me know.

Innovation Caravan:

For 5th and 6th Grade Teachers…..

Here is the application for the South Bay Innovation Caravan. (due Nov 18th)

From Jennifer Oliveira

“Consider students in your class who might have an idea to share. Although we will be excited for any and all applications, DO NOT feel like you have to have your whole class participate. At the same time, don’t feel like you have to limit the number of applications from your class. Remember this can be based on something students are already doing with you OR can be an outside of school project.”

Fall Book Order:

The District has allocated money to support classroom libraries. As we already have the money, I’d like to get books in the hands of our students sooner rather than later. We have a budget for approximately $200 per classroom. Please complete the survey at this link by Wed. Oct 5th . I will be purchasing the books in bulk to get us the best deal.

Classroom Furniture Budget:

As a reminder, you have a classroom Furniture Budget of $75.00. All receipts must be submitted by Oct 12th. You may use this money to purchase bookshelves, rugs, flexible seating for students. If you are not sure if something would be appropriate, please see me to discuss in advance of your purchase.

Box Tops Teacher Contest:

Our goal is to raise $1500 in Box Tops collections this school year. If we earn $750 in our first collection (until December), we will provide $100 to be spent on classroom materials (furniture, books, etc) to the teacher who’s classroom collects the most money. Please encourage your students and families to return them to the school.

Weekly Update: September 6, 2016

I hope that you were able to enjoy a long and relaxing weekend!

Staff Professional Development:

We will meet this Wednesday, Sept. 7th at 1:45 in room 23. My most sincere apology for the confusion around the staff meeting date. I appreciate all the efforts that you went to as you re-scheduled conferences. I look forward to learning more alongside you about best practices during student independent reading time. Dr. McNamara will join us at the end of our meeting.

Reading Assessment Data Entered- Sept 9th:

Entering Fountas and Pinnell Data:

Click here for instructions for entering Fountas and Pinnell data into Illuminate. Different than last year, you will select 2016- 2017 SBUSD Fountas & Pinnell 1st Administration to enter data.

As you enter student data, please be sure that for each student you indicate the Instructional Level, Independent Level, Accuracy, Fluency and Comprehension and note the Genre.

Please let me know ASAP if you need any assistance completing your assessments or entering your data by our extended deadline.

Fountas and Pinnell District Benchmarks:

The District created a benchmark chart to support our understanding of our students’ progress toward the goal of having all students reading at grade level by third grade Click here to view the chart.

Coach’s Corner:

“You can do this! You can help kids fall in love with reading. You can fill your classroom with amazing books kids want to get their hands on. You can find time every single day to allow kids to read books they care about. You can observe, respond, and interact with readers in powerful, meaningful ways.” Simple Starts by Kari Yates is a great resource for creating your reader-centered classroom. It has great insight on the simple, but important details of literacy instruction that sometimes get overlooked. For example, you can find information on creating anchor charts, comfortable reading spaces, or even managing classroom library routines. If you do not have this book yet, please see me for your very own copy.

TK-2 Technology Update:

Teachers in grades TK-2 should expect IT to deliver your “Tech Tub”, 8 total touchscreen (Asus) Chromebook Flip devices per room and 8 sets of headphones.

Soaring to Success Awards Assemblies:

Please provide any feedback (positive/negative) from students/families about this transition. As I communicate the change, I speak about how my hope is that the new ceremony is more meaningful for students-rather than simply hearing their name read for one or more times, students may be inspired by our Emory students’ actions.
