Weekly Update August 29, 2016

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you for all your hard work, risk taking and growth. I am so excited by what I see happening in your classrooms. I hope you are having fun with your students and are proud of your accomplishments.

ELD starts Tuesday:

ELD begins this Tuesday, August 30 and will happen Tuesday through Friday. In your mail box, you received a copy of your class roster with placement information for all of your students (EL and EO).

Important things to Remember:

  • Students will line up for ELD/EO group on the blacktop after recess
  • Please be sure your students know where to line up (practice??)
  • Before bringing your ELD/EO group in, take attendance on the blacktop
  • Sharon Aguilera will meet with students in room 24

Soaring to Success Assembly:

 

Thank you for your hard work preparing for our first Soaring to Success Assembly.

Friday, Sept 2nd

8:10-8:40         Grade 2

8:45-9:15         Grade 4

9:20-9:50         Grade 3

10:00-10:30     Grade 1

10:35-11:05     Grade 5

1:50-2:20         Grade 6

  • Teachers will bring students to the Cafeteria/Auditorium at the start time for their assembly.
  • Jenn will welcome all and invite the teacher to the podium.
  • Teacher will make brief welcoming remarks. (all students still seated)
  • Teacher will read first student write up, after reading the write up, the teacher will announce the name. “Example, a few weeks ago, a student in our class organized our classroom library. He got the bins straightened up and etc . Please join me in congratulating Jose V for showing responsibility in our classroom.”
  • As the audience is applauding, please invite the child to the podium.
  • Teacher will hand student the certificate and written statement of teacher remarks.
  • Jenn will hand window cling, bracelet and local business gift certificate (boomers this time). Student will sit back down. Teacher will recognize additional students similarly.
  • After recognizing all students in the class. The teacher will introduce the next teacher who will recognize his/her students.
  • After all grade level teachers have recognized students, Jenn will close the ceremony and ask all students to remain seated except the award winners.
  • We will take one photo of all grade level winners and their teachers.

Student names and brief write ups are due to Eunice Monday, Aug 29th.

Respect:

We will be starting our new character trait next week which is Respect. The award assembly will be on October 14th.The video is available on the connect with kids website (http://sbusd.connectwithkids.com/). The video can be reached by going to Student Resources-> Elementary->Character/Life Skills. Lesson plans to use/modify are right below the video and the K-2 lesson plans are available on the previous page.

Staff PD:

We will NOT meet as a team this week this Wed, Aug 31st is a personal planning day (and pay day).

 

 

Fountas and Pinnell Update:

The district made the  decision to extend the due date for F and P assessments to September 9th. The remaining dates on the assessment calendar will remain as is.

Entering Fountas and Pinnell Data:

Click here for instructions for entering Fountas and Pinnell data into Illuminate. Different than last year, you will select 2016- 2017 SBUSD Fountas & Pinnell 1st Administration to enter data.

As you enter student data, please be sure that for each student you indicate the Instructional Level, Independent Level, Accuracy, Fluency and Comprehension and note the Genre.

Also, some questions have been raised about why we would report both instructional and independent levels.  Please note that we have adjusted the input in Illuminate to be clearer and hopefully less cumbersome.  Once teachers have determined instructional level, we should be entering the details for that level, i.e. accuracy, fluency, comprehension.  For independent, only the level should be noted.  It is important to report instructional in detail so that teachers and grade levels can better form small groups, set student goals, etc.  Independent level helps with selecting books for classroom libraries, book boxes, etc. 

Coach’s Corner:

Have you found yourself in a situation, when administering the F & P assessment, where the levels are not clear for a student? For example, the student scores independent at two levels or he/she does not have an instructional level. If you find yourself in a situation like this, please refer to the section in your Assessment Guide titled, When the Numbers Don’t Add up Perfectly (System 1: page 45-48, System 2: page 44-47). In this section you will find a table with some problems that you may encounter when scoring the assessment, along with examples and solutions. If you are faced with a problem that is not listed there, I will be happy to help troubleshoot the situation.

Fountas and Pinnell District Benchmarks:

Thank you for sending me copies of what you are sending home to families. Please continue to provide Eunice a copy. (field trip notices, newsletters, etc. )

Lockdown Drill:

We will have our first lockdown drill on Tuesday, Aug 30 at 9:00 a.m. The drill will begin with me announcing that we are in a lockdown situation. Please follow the protocols which Eunice sent via email. You can resume normal activity after one of us has unlocked your door and cleared your classroom. Please let me know if you have any questions.

District Champions Program:

These quarterly awards will recognize students, parents, staff, and community members who demonstrate outstanding work, dedication to the District’s mission and goals, commitment to our community.You may submit a recommendation via this link.Team Emory is amazing! Please submit names of your colleagues, students, family and community members who deserve recognition.

Future Ready Committee:

The District is looking for volunteers to help define the South Bay vision for technology and personalized integrated learning. We’re looking for teachers, principals, coaches, IMRT, and parents. APPLY HERE.

PTA Room Monitor:

The Emory PTA has established the role of “room monitor”. The job of the room monitor is to communicate with our families about PTA events/activities (Bingo Night, Fundraisers, etc). At this time, not all classrooms have a room monitor.Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
