Best wishes for a very happy Teacher Appreciation Week! I certainly appreciate all that you do for our students, their families each other and me. Thank you very much for all of your hard work this week and throughout the year.
Staff Appreciation Luncheon:
Please join us on Tuesday, May 3rd for a staff appreciation luncheon.
Who: The Amazing Emory Staff
What: Delicious Taco Lunch
When: Tuesday, May 3rd at lunch
Why: Because you’re awesome and I’m grateful for all you do
SBUSD Employee Day is Wednesday, May 4:
The District will be celebrating you on Wednesday, May 4th with a breakfast at 7:30 a.m. in our lounge. Please stop by to enjoy each other’s company and some breakfast treats.
Testing for students in grades 3-8 continues. See schedule and details below. Bigs thanks to Chris for coordinating and to all of you for your hard work.
PLC in Room 28 during testing:To allow us to use room 23 for student assessment make ups, during CAASPP/SBAC testing (April 25-May 6) please use room 28 for PLC.Sorry for the inconvenience.
Shutdown Chromebooks Daily:Because the CAASP SecureBrowser needs to be able to be updated on a daily basis, please ensure that students actually SHUT DOWN their device at the end of each day. Many students have a habit of only closing their lid or letting their device “sleep,” but this is insufficient to allow necessary updates to the system or the testing browser.
As a reminder to all, please avoid using the internet to allow our students or to use the teacher computer to stream any video content (brain pop, youtube etc) before lunch.
No Staff Meeting this week. Please use the time to plan by yourself or with your team.
Positive Behavior Support/Character Trait:
We will be starting our new character trait for the month of May. The virtue we will be looking at is Integrity. The video is available on the connect with kids website (http://sbusd.connectwithkids.com/). The video can be reached by going to Student Resources-> Elementary->Character/Life Skills. Lesson plans to use/modify are right below the video and the K-2 lesson plans are available on the previous page. Let Lindsay know if you have any problems logging in.
I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the playground closure was delayed until May 9th. At that time the sandbox portion of the playground will be closed for the remainder of the year beginning. Students will be able to use the field, and all asphalt areas. Remember to use blue slips to reward appropriate behavior. I will attempt to hold more frequent drawings.
Blue Slips at Lunch on Monday:
Please bring your blue slips with you to lunch on Monday. Anticipating that the playground was going to close, I told students that I would award prizes from the wagon Monday, May 2 during lunch.
The PTA Unity Games will be held on Saturday, May 21st from 9:00-12:00 at Mar Vista High School. By Wednesday, May 11th , please work with your grade level team to identify the students who will represent Emory at the Unity Games (they will receive a permission slip/invitation provided by the District PTA). Please email me your names. You may use your p.e. time to facilitate events and identify our winners or you may choose students who are athletically inclined and interested in participating. There probably is not a way to replicate the obstacle course competition. Please identify one boy and one girl from each grade to represent Emory in the events listed below and email me their names by May 11th. Grades K-3 should email me 10 names. Grades 4-6 should email me 16 names. (the same students may compete in multiple events)

I have been off campus so much since we returned from spring break that I have not had time to visit your classrooms and observe how much our students are learning. I hope to be back visiting clasrooms this week. Please let me know if there is anything that you would like me to see. I will try very hard to be there.
Lunch Lady Hero Week:
This year we will be honoring our Child Nutrition Staff on School Lunch Hero Day on Friday May 6, 2016. School Lunch Hero Day was created from a partnership between the School Nutrition Association and author Jarrett J. Krosoczka, author of the “Lunch Lady” book series.
- There is a large banner posted in the auditorium. Please bring your students by to write nice messages to their cafeteria staff.
- Many of your requested cards from Eunice. Please have your students complete the cards and deliver them to our child nutrition staff during throughout the week
Week one of assessments is done! We are halfway through! Everyone has been working hard, especially our students. Primary teachers and students have been very supportive of testing. It’s a group effort. Please take some time and have fun with your class. It is good for everyone to participate in activities that bring smiles, laughter and emotion. Go out and enjoy the sun, create some artwork, read a good book (a is teacher sharing Where the Red Fern Grows), watch an inspiring video. Balancing work and play is important. We’ve all done the best we can to prepare and teach our students. Don’t forget to enjoy them as well.
I strongly encourage you to consider joining the next cohort of workshop teachers. Click here to learn more about this commitment.
Jen Oliveira has curated a web site with TONS of information about the workshop model. Click here Info about Workshop to learn more.
