Weekly Update: 4/7/2014

Welcome back everyone and I sincerely hope you find yourself well rested because we’ve got a busy 9 weeks ahead of us!!  Thank you classroom teachers for your positive attitudes and focused attention and involvement in our PD on Monday.  Here are the updates for this week:

PLCs:

We will have 5th grade PLC on Tuesday at 8:55a.m. due to the minimum day AND 1st/4th grade PLC will take place on Friday this week since there were no students on Monday.  Please use this time to plan around ELA Common Core, review CAASPP needs (for grades 3-6), or to do some exploration on some of the resources provided to you on Monday with regards to Math Common Core.

Staff Meeting:

We will have a staff meeting this Wednesday for last minute review of CAASPP information for Gr. 3-6 in Rm. 13 at 1:40.  (Thank you Leslie!) This should not last more than 45 minutes.  Gr. K-2, please use this time to meet with your grade level team to do some add’l planning.  We will NOT have a staff meeting next Wednesday.

CAASPP- Please read 3rd-6th grade teachers:

To those of you who are administering the test, please refer to emails from Chris if your memory is failing you after Spring Break. (like mine is 🙂  He sent emails with info on the following dates:

3/5/2014 -powerpoint and assessment schedule

3/7/2014 – youtube video on field test overview

3/12/2014 – reminder email about meeting with your buddy teacher to practice

3/13/2014 – update from CAASPP meeting to emphasize spending time on “training test” and to share with you the focus for each grade level/grade level variations

3/17/2014 – to alert you that you should be receiving an email from Smarter Balanced with your log-in information.  (a few teachers confirmed with me today that they received this email from Smarter Balanced a day or two before Spring Break)

Thank you again to our Chromebook teachers for your flexibility in lending your Chromebooks to our other grade levels for CAASPP preparation and testing.  Please plan to “loan” them to your partners for an avg. of one to two hours per day for this week for practice.

For those of you who are “borrowing” the Chromebooks, please remember it is up to you to confer with your Chromebook partner to arrange a time to practice with them.  Please do not assume that the 6th grade teachers can loan them to you at the drop of a hat.  Hopefully some of you already did some practice before break but if you didn’t, we don’t have a lot of time left and the 6th grade teachers will still need them for some instruction over the course of the next couple of weeks.

In order to accommodate the need to practice AND take the actual assessment, we will not have ELD for the following grade levels on the following weeks: (hopefully this will allow borrowing to take place from 8:15-10:00ish this week)

April 8-11

No ELD for 3rd grade.  Please meet with your 6th grade chromebook partner to see if you could use this time to practice with your students.

April 14-18

No ELD for 3rd grade.  CAASPP testing taking place from 8:15-11:30 daily.

April 21-25

No ELD for Grades 4-6.  CAASPP testing taking place from 8:15-11:30 daily.

April 28-May 2

No ELD for Grades 4-6. CAASPP testing taking place from 8:15-11:30 daily.

May 5-16

These are our alloted “make-up” days and hopefully we can return to normal ELD schedules for all grades during these weeks.  We will keep you posted.

Please also note that your RSP schedule may become quite “flexible” during the next few weeks as Tracy and Nora create a schedule that allows them to push in for CAASPP support and pull out for any one on one testing that may be required due to IEP goals.

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR YOUR FLEXIBILITY.  THIS WILL BE MUCH BETTER NEXT YEAR WHEN WE HAVE MORE CHROMEBOOKS AND COMPUTERS AT OUR DISPOSAL and HAVE A BETTER IDEA OF THE ASSESSMENT!!

PBS:

We will not have our Monday PBS lessons until after CAASPP testing is finished so please use this time for other worthy endeavors– like Writing!!

PLNU Art Students:

Our Art student teachers will be teaching their first lessons with Gr. 2-4 this Thursday at 1:30p.m.  Please remember not to jump in and take over the lesson— this is their time to succeed (or fail a little) and learn from their mistakes.

Question of the Week:

What was your favorite highlight from Spring Break?

Quote of the Week:

“If you think you can, you can.  And if you think you can’t, you’re right”.  -Mary Kay Ash

  1. We had a group of my former students with whom we keep in touch over for dinner – 3 couples with the kids of 2 of the couples. We always have a great time. 🙂

  2. I enjoyed downtime, creating a new batch of beer, and going to the Cineopolis movie theater for my wife’s birthday.

  3. Installing a ceiling fan and watching a huge —— skunk eat snails in

my backyard 8:00 at night!(But it didn’t spray!).

  4. Seeing Disneyland and California Adventure through the eyes of my seven years young granddaughter, Soleil !
